πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸ’» The True Meaning of Productivity

πŸ“ Doctor Kenji's Notes

Hey guys! πŸ‘‹ Hope you're all having a fantastic start to your week.

As some of you may know, last week, junior doctors participated in a 5-day strike. During this time, I took a full 5-day break, completely disconnecting from work, including emails and work-related tasks. Instead, I chose to seize this opportunity to reconnect with some old friends from university who came to stay with me for the weekend.

In the past, such a decision might have been daunting for me, considering the hustle and productivity culture that was so popular during my med school days. However, my perspective on productivity has slowly shifted since. Back then, I would have hesitated to put my work aside for even a few days, believing that productivity was solely measured by tasks advancing my career or financial goals.

But this weekend was different. As I enter my late twenties, I have come to realize that productivity cannot be confined to the narrow parameters of professional growth. Rather, it is a holistic concept that encompasses every aspect of our lives. True productivity, to me, now means pursuing actions that bring me closer to living a life that I consider happy and fulfilled, no matter what they might be.

During my time off, my friends and I reminisced about our university days, laughing and enjoying each other's company. We shared meals together, went on walks and even squeezed in some workouts. Although these activities might not be traditionally labeled "productive," they were undoubtedly aligned with my core values of nurturing personal connections, happiness and well-being.

I recognize that this change in perspective might not be easy for everyone to embrace (it certainly wasn’t for me), especially when societal pressures push us to achieve more in our careers and financial pursuits constantly. Nevertheless, taking this time for myself and rekindling old friendships reminded me of the importance of balance and making room for the people and experiences that truly matter to us.

As I began this week, I felt re-energised and more motivated than ever to pursue my career and financial goals. The difference now is that I am grounded in the understanding that a life well-lived is one that strikes a harmonious balance between professional aspirations and personal fulfillment.

So, as we navigate the complexities of life and work, I encourage you to reflect on what productivity means to you personally, rather than allowing our society to define it for us. Embrace the idea that pursuing happiness, cultivating relationships and engaging in self-care are essential components of a fulfilling life and are too productive endavours.

See you on the next one! Kenji.

πŸ‘πŸΎ Things I’ve enjoyed this week

  • This is Us (Amazon Prime series) - I started this after a recommendation from a friend, and I’ve fallen in love with it. It’s a great thing to watch and relax too after a long shift!

  • One Sec (app) - I started using this app last week, and it’s saved me from so much procrastination on social media. It basically delays opening Instagram or Tiktok for a few seconds, making you think twice before opening up the app to procrastinate.

  • Munch (AI software) - This app uses AI to convert your long-form content to short-form really quickly. Still testing it, back it’s looking promising!

πŸ“š Highlight of the week

You’ve been looking for the best person, place, or career. But seeking the best is the problem. No choice is inherently the best. What makes something the best choice? You. You make it the best through your commitment to it. Your dedication and actions make any choice great.

What small step can you take today that will put you on the path toward something wonderful?

However, if your philosophy is to avoid debt as much as possible, you’ll go far. For example, it is common to get a new job and immediately run out and buy a nice new car. Resist that. Buy a car that is a few years old and doesn’t cost a fortune. Your instincts toward impressing your contemporaries coupled with the lures of easy credit will tempt you in the other direction. Always remember that nothing is more impressive than being able to do what you want, when you want, for as long as you want. You’re not there yet, and buying an expensive car is a good way to ensure that you’ll never get there. Why? Because it’s all about money out versus money in.
